Melsted is a small fishing hamlet on Bornholm's north-east coast, just south of Gudhjem. It grew up around a natural fishing ground beside three skerries – Guleklippe, Sorteskær and Guleskær – and has retained its intimate, fishing-village character to this day. Half-timbered cottages, smokehouse chimneys, a granite harbour and a sandy beach make Melsted one of the most beautiful and peaceful spots on the island.
Melsted is a typical Bornholm fiskerleje – a fishing settlement where life has revolved around the sea for centuries. The tightly packed, well-kept half-timbered houses, narrow winding streets, and four buildings still bearing their original smokehouse chimneys testify to a herring-smoking tradition that drove the local economy for generations.
Coastal ramparts to the north and south of the harbour have survived – elements of Bornholm's fortifications from about seven centuries ago, recalling the island's strategic importance in the Middle Ages.
The harbour in Melsted was built from granite in 1884. It is a small private harbour, well protected between two skerries – Sorteskær and Guleskær. Today it serves as the home port for around 50 local pleasure craft and skiffs, but also welcomes small visiting yachts. A quiet spot where you can watch everyday fishing life and soak up the authentic atmosphere of Bornholm's coastline.
Between the harbour and the historic seaside hotel Melsted Badehotel stretches Melsted Strand – a small, cosy sandy beach ideal for families with children. At one end, a small stream flows into the sea where children can spend hours building dams and pools. At the other end there is a bathing jetty to help avoid the pebbly seabed. Dogs are welcome, and there are several convenient car parks by the main road and in the village itself.
Overlooking the beach stands the distinctive, historic Melsted Badehotel, which has been in operation for decades. Today it houses a gourmet restaurant regarded as one of the finest on the island. An excellent choice for dinner after a day spent on the beach or at the harbour.
About 300 metres from the harbour, along the main road, stands Melstedgård – a 300-year-old half-timbered farmstead with a thatched roof housing an agricultural museum. Here you can see what life was like on a Bornholm farm centuries ago.
Melstedgård also hosts the Centre for Culinary Heritage of Bornholm (Bornholms Center for Kulinarisk Arv). In the "Skafferiet" shop in the farm's courtyard you can buy almost the entire range of Bornholm's renowned regional specialities, while the newly built "gaarden" hosts cookery classes where you can learn to prepare traditional island dishes.
Melsted lies on Bornholm's north-east coast, directly south of Gudhjem – you can walk to the town centre in just a few minutes. To the south, the coastline continues towards Svaneke. An excellent starting point for both the Kyststien coastal path and excursions inland.
A picturesque town right next to Melsted – steep streets, smokehouses, the Oluf Høst Museum, and a ferry to Christiansø. Home of the iconic "Sol over Gudhjem" smoked herring dish.
One of the best-preserved towns in Denmark, awarded the European Gold Medal for heritage conservation. Harbour, Svaneke Bryghus brewery, glass workshops, and charming streets.
