Balka is a small seaside settlement situated between Nexø and Snogebæk, best known for one of Bornholm’s most beautiful beaches. The beach is wide, with pale, powder-soft sand and a very gentle shoreline, making it perfect for families, those seeking relaxation, and anyone who enjoys long walks along the Baltic coast. The atmosphere is peaceful and summery – unhurried, uncrowded, close to nature and accompanied by the soothing sound of the waves.
Balka is a place where life unfolds close to the sea. The main attraction is, of course, Balka Beach – one of the widest and brightest beaches on Bornholm. Its pale, powder-soft sand and very gentle shoreline make it ideal for families with children, relaxed beachgoers and those who enjoy long, unhurried swims. Even in the height of summer, the atmosphere remains calm and welcoming – far from noisy resort crowds. Balka is also a good spot for activities – in summer you can rent a kayak, a SUP board or a small sailboat.
The beach is surrounded by dunes and small pine groves, where walking and cycling paths lead towards Nexø and Snogebæk. Thanks to this, Balka is a great starting point for short seaside trips, with stops for coffee or ice cream in nearby villages. In the evening, the area becomes wonderfully quiet – ideal for rest and time close to nature.
The heart of the area is, of course, Balka Beach, curving in a wide arc between Nexø and Snogebæk. It is one of the most photogenic beaches on the island, especially in the morning, when the sand is still cool and the water calm like a lake.
Right by the beach you’ll find a watersports centre where you can rent equipment or take a short introductory session — a great opportunity to try sea kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding or sailing small dinghies.
In the southern part of Balka there is a lovely stretch of natural dunes and quiet coves, where you can find your own piece of beach even in the summer season. It is also worth taking a stroll towards the small harbour of Snogebæk, where you’ll find cafés, restaurants and a charming wooden bridge leading to the pier.
Balka is located between Nexø and Snogebæk, on the gentle, sandy coastline of south-eastern Bornholm. The surroundings consist of pine groves, dunes and paths running along the sea, making it an excellent area for seaside walks and bike trips towards Snogebæk or Dueodde.
Just a few minutes’ walk to the south lies Snogebæk – a small seaside village with local shops, an ice cream parlour, cafés and the characteristic wooden bridge leading to the pier. It’s an ideal place for lunch, a treat or a quiet evening walk.
To the north lies Nexø – one of Bornholm’s larger towns, with a harbour, shops, cafés and a smokehouse. It is also a starting point for cycle routes leading towards Dueodde and into the island’s interior.
A little further south lies Dueodde – famous for having the whitest sand on Bornholm, a tall lighthouse and wide views over the open sea. It is one of the most striking stretches of coastline on the island.
