Bølshavn – a coastal settlement between Svaneke and Gudhjem

Bølshavn

Bølshavn is a small settlement on the eastern coast of Bornholm, situated precisely between Svaneke and Gudhjem. At its centre lies a modest harbour where local fishing boats moor, surrounded by low, traditional fishermen’s cottages. The village has retained its simple, orderly character and offers a peaceful atmosphere, along with easy access to walking paths that run along the rocky shoreline.

Character, History and Atmosphere of Bølshavn and Its Surroundings

In the immediate surroundings of Bølshavn, the landscape quickly shifts from neat village buildings to more natural, protected coastal areas. The coastal meadows display characteristic undulating terrain, which is a remnant of an ancient shoreline dating back several thousand years. Along the paths, you can also find small historical traces, including a modest runestone and the subtle remains of former coastal fortifications, now visible only as gentle landscape features.

Ypnasted and Saltuna

Heading north towards Ypnasted and Saltuna, the landscape becomes increasingly rugged and rocky. Small, no-longer-active fishing harbours carved into the rock — such as Haralds Havn — recall the days when this part of the coast was used by farmer-fishermen. The small settlement of Saltuna, with its modest port of Svendsens Havn, has preserved its simple and traditional character.

Trail from Bølshavn to Saltuna

A popular and scenic coastal walking route leads from Bølshavn northwards. This section of the Kyststien coastal trail passes through Ypnasted, former small fishing landings and stretches of rocky shoreline. The trail is around 5 km one way and is an excellent choice for a calm, leisurely half-day hike.

Randkløve Skår

The most spectacular highlight along this route is Randkløve Skår — a tall and narrow fissure in the granite cliff, and one of Bornholm’s most remarkable natural formations. It is surrounded by natural woodland with wild cherry trees and juniper, giving the place a unique, almost primeval atmosphere. Randkløve can be reached on foot from Bølshavn or from the nearby car park at Randkløvegård followed by a short walk to the cliff.

Saltuna

Saltuna is a small settlement located right by the water, known for its intimate harbour, Svendsens Havn, and the steep cliffs rising directly behind the houses. The village has retained its historic layout and the character of a small coastal community, evident in the arrangement of its farms and its close connection to the sea. It is a peaceful place and an ideal endpoint for a walk from Bølshavn.

Location and Surroundings

Bølshavn does not sit directly on the island’s main coastal road. It is reached via a short local road branching off route 158, which connects Svaneke and Gudhjem. This makes the settlement easy to access, while still maintaining a quiet, almost secluded atmosphere away from traffic.
