Gudhjem – Harbor, Cliffs, and Baltic Sea Views

Gudhjem on Bornholm

Gudhjem is a picturesque town built on a steep, rocky hillside, where colorful houses cascade down toward the harbor. It has a unique, almost "Mediterranean" atmosphere — narrow streets, warm sunshine, and sea views create a truly special setting. Gudhjem is also the departure point for boat trips to the island of Christiansø, and the surrounding area offers scenic coastal walking trails as well as traditional smokehouses serving local specialties.

Climate and Attractions in Gudhjem

In the center of Gudhjem you’ll find St. Anne’s Church, located on a hill with views over the harbor. Overlooking the town stands Gudhjem Mølle – a large white windmill visible from many places around the area. It’s also worth visiting the Gudhjem Museum, which presents local art and history. The best viewpoint is Bokul Hill, offering a panoramic view of the town, the sea, and the island of Christiansø. The harbor remains the heart of Gudhjem – boat trips depart from here, and the terraced streets lead down between the houses right to the water’s edge.

What to See in Gudhjem

The best way to start exploring Gudhjem is from the harbor, which is the natural center of life in town. From here, narrow, winding streets lead upward, filled with small shops, workshops, and cafés — creating the town’s distinctive terraced layout.

In the upper part of Gudhjem, you’ll find St. Anne’s Church and the Gudhjem Mølle windmill, a prominent landmark visible from afar. Above the town rises Bokul Hill, where a marked trail leads to a viewpoint with panoramic views of the sea and Christiansø. It’s also worth visiting the Gudhjem Museum, which presents local art and cultural history tied to the northeastern part of Bornholm.

Sights in the Surrounding Area

Passenger boats to Christiansø depart from Gudhjem’s harbor (daily in summer, less frequently outside the season). The journey takes around 55 minutes and is one of Bornholm’s classic excursions.

A few kilometers to the west lie the Helligdomsklipperne – dramatic coastal rock formations with scenic walking paths. Right next to them is the Bornholm Art Museum, showcasing art inspired by the island’s light, landscape, and history.

The surrounding coastline also offers natural bathing spots and small granite coves, perfect for quiet relaxation close to the sea.

Good to Know
  • Gudhjem is very steep, so it’s best explored on foot in comfortable shoes – many streets are short but quite steep
  • The boat to Christiansø departs daily in the summer, but it’s worth checking the timetable in advance, as seats can be limited
