Aakirkeby – The Peaceful Heart of Bornholm

Aakirkeby – The Center of Bornholm

Aakirkeby is a town located in the south-central part of Bornholm, away from the coast, surrounded by green fields and gentle hills. It has a calm, local atmosphere, with everyday life centered around the small town square and the characteristic Romanesque Aakirke church, which has marked the heart of the town for centuries. It’s a great place to pause while exploring the island – close both to the beaches and to Bornholm’s natural attractions.

Aakirkeby – History, Town Layout and Character

Aakirkeby is one of the oldest settlements on Bornholm, which is especially noticeable in the structure of its old town and the monumental Aakirke – a Romanesque church from the 12th century that once served as the religious and administrative center of the entire island. Around the town square you’ll find small shops, a café, and a handful of local services, all contributing to a calm atmosphere that differs from the more bustling coastal towns. It’s a good place to experience Bornholm “from within” – from a local perspective.

The town is surrounded by agricultural landscapes and gentle hills, crossed by numerous walking and cycling routes. Nearby lies Almindingen – one of the largest forest areas in Denmark, ideal for hiking, birdwatching and exploring natural rock formations such as Rokkestenen – the famous “rocking stone.” Thanks to its location, Aakirkeby is a great starting point both to the northern and southern parts of Bornholm.

What to See in Aakirkeby

At the very center of the town stands Aakirke, a powerful Romanesque church from the 12th century, built from large, light stone blocks. It is one of the oldest churches on Bornholm and served as an important landmark for sailors. Inside, you can see preserved medieval details, and the two characteristic towers give the building its monumental silhouette.

A major highlight of Aakirkeby is NaturBornholm – a modern science and visitor center that presents the history of the island from prehistoric times to the present day. It is particularly recommended for families and anyone interested in Bornholm’s geology — here you’ll find fossils, landscape reconstructions, and in the summer also small outdoor animal enclosures.

A walk through the town leads along small, quiet streets that have retained their intimate character. Around the square you’ll find small shops, a café and local services — all at a slower pace than in the seaside towns. It’s a pleasant stop before exploring deeper into the island or heading toward the beaches.

What to See in the Surrounding Area

Almindingen – one of Denmark’s largest forests – lies just a short distance from Aakirkeby. This is a vast area perfect for walking, cycling and nature observation. In the forest you’ll find lakes, viewpoints, wildlife areas, and the popular Rokkestenen – a large glacial erratic stone that can be gently rocked by hand.

To the south, the road leads to Dueodde, one of Bornholm’s most iconic destinations. It is known for its ultra-fine white sand, wide beaches and a tall lighthouse offering panoramic views of the coastline. It is one of the most beautiful seaside landscapes on the island.

It is also worth visiting Nylars, where you will find one of Bornholm’s distinctive round churches. This church has preserved remarkable frescoes and a defensive structure, reminding us that these buildings once served both religious and protective purposes.
