Allinge-Sandvig is a pair of neighboring towns in the north of Bornholm, known for their cozy harbors, peaceful atmosphere, and easy walking routes. Nearby are the ruins of Hammershus — the largest medieval fortress in Scandinavia — and the Hammerknuden peninsula, with numerous scenic viewpoints. In Sandvig, you'll also find a charming sandy beach, perfect for swimming or relaxing after a day of exploring.
Allinge-Sandvig stands out for its rugged northern scenery and close proximity to some of Bornholm’s most iconic landscapes. In Allinge, you’ll find a small harbor and places to try local smoked fish, while Sandvig has a more relaxed, holiday atmosphere with access to the beach and quiet coves. The two towns are connected by a seaside promenade and walking paths that continue toward Hammerhavn, the starting point for popular scenic hiking routes. During summer, local festivals, concerts, and cultural events take place here, giving Allinge-Sandvig a laid-back holiday feel without the crowds of larger resort towns.
In Allinge, it’s worth visiting St. Nicholas Church (Allinge Kirke) — a modest coastal church with views over the harbor and the bay. In Sandvig, you’ll find Sandvig Kirke, a small, bright church with a simple island character. Right by the beach in Sandvig stands a wooden pavilion from the early 20th century — a recognizable landmark, now used for gatherings, events, or as a peaceful place to sit and enjoy the sea.
A coastal walking route connects Allinge and Sandvig, and at the southern end of Sandvig lies Hammerhavn — a small harbor that serves as the ideal starting point for walks to Hammershus and onto the Hammerknuden peninsula. This area is full of footpaths, resting spots, and excellent viewpoints overlooking Bornholm’s northern coastline.
South of Sandvig lies Hammershus — the expansive ruins of the largest medieval fortress in Scandinavia, set high on a cliff with views of the sea. Just below the castle is Hammersø, the largest lake on Bornholm, surrounded by walking paths. A little further on is Opalsø — a former quarry now filled with crystal-clear water, popular for natural swimming and cliff jumping.
Heading west toward Vang, you’ll find viewpoints and smaller trails that lead through granite landscapes, heath, and low coastal vegetation.
