Melstedgård – a living museum among the fields of Bornholm

Melstedgård is a unique open-air museum located near Gudhjem, where visitors can travel back in time and experience life on a Bornholm farm as it was centuries ago. This is a place where the past comes to life – hosts dressed in traditional costumes demonstrate the daily chores once carried out on local farms. You can see how homemade mustard was made using a cannonball, how fabrics were embroidered, and what farm work looked like in the 19th century.

Guests are warmly encouraged to ask questions, chat, and listen to stories about rural life in bygone times. Outside, farm animals – cows, sheep, pigs, and horses – await visitors and happily accept a friendly scratch behind the ear.

Melstedgård is not only an agricultural museum but also a center for Bornholm’s culinary culture

Just across from the historic half-timbered farmstead stands the modern House of Food Culture, where old cooking traditions meet innovative techniques. Visitors can step inside to discover experiments in fermentation, brewing, and homemade ice cream making.

At the heart of the courtyard lies the charming café Skafferiet, serving local drinks, snacks, and delicacies made by Bornholm producers. It’s the perfect place to relax in the garden with a refreshing juice, taste regional dishes, or pick up something to go. Special events are held regularly, such as family ice cream workshops, herb-foraging walks along the Gudhjem coast, and folk music and dance performances in the courtyard.
