Bornholm is one of the best places in Denmark for windsurfing and kitesurfing. Crystal-clear Baltic Sea waters, long sandy beaches and consistent wind conditions have been attracting surfers to the island for years. Within Bornholm's compact area you'll find over a hundred spots – and when the wind shifts direction, it only takes 20–30 minutes to drive to the other side of the island and find perfect conditions.
Particularly popular is Balka on the south-east coast – repeatedly voted one of the best beaches in Denmark. But that's just the beginning – Bornholm offers spots for every skill level: from shallow, sheltered bays ideal for learning, to open stretches with good waves for freeriding and wave sailing.
Below you'll find an overview of the four most popular surfing spots on the island – with information on wind directions, bottom conditions, suitability for beginners and access.
The main and best-known surfing spot on Bornholm. Balka beach stretches for several kilometres between Nexø and Snogebæk on the south-east coast. Fine white sand with no rocks, shallow water with a sandy bottom – ideal conditions for beginners and experienced surfers alike. With NE winds, clean and regular waves build up. The beach is sheltered from the prevailing westerly winds, so it's often calm here when the rest of the island is windy.
Dueodde beach on the island's southern tip offers over 10 km of the finest white sand – one of the widest beaches in Scandinavia (up to 300 m). With westerly and south-westerly winds, good waves form across multiple sandbars. The water is clean and clear. The vast space means there is always room for safe kite flying, even in peak season.
A spot on the south coast, south-east of Rønne. A wide, sandy beach with good conditions for entering the water. In the right wind, solid waves develop. The water is clean, but rocks may be present on the bottom in some places – watch out. A notable feature of this spot is the sharp transition from shallow to deep water.
A beach along Nordre Kystvej in Rønne – the only spot within walking distance of the island's capital. A long sandy beach with dunes, fine white sand, though there may be rocks near the waterline. Works well with winds from the SW–NNW sector. Keep in mind the fast ferries on the Rønne–Ystad route, which can generate unexpected waves even in calm weather.
Bornholm offers surfers over 100 spots – from sheltered bays to open beaches with waves

Bornholm is home to surf schools and centres that offer beginner courses, equipment rental and organised sessions on the water. If you've never tried surfing – the island is an excellent place to start. Instructors know the local conditions and will pick a spot suited to the current weather and your skill level.
Water sports centres on the island offer windsurfing, kitesurfing and SUP equipment, as well as private and group lessons.
The surfing season on Bornholm runs from May to October. The warmest water (17–20°C) is in July and August, but the best wind conditions often occur in spring (May–June) and early autumn (September–October), when the wind is steadier and the beaches are uncrowded. In winter, water temperatures drop to 2–5°C and a dry wetsuit is required – but the waves can be well worth it.
