Bornholm is an island with strong maritime traditions, and its ports have been important points on the Baltic map for centuries. Along the coast, you’ll find both large fishing and ferry ports as well as smaller harbors for sailing boats and fishing vessels. The largest ones – in Rønne, Nexø, and Allinge – handle ferry, cargo, and tourist traffic, connecting Bornholm with Denmark, Sweden, Germany, and Poland. These are vibrant places where the sea meets the daily life of the island’s inhabitants.
For sailors, Bornholm is a true paradise. The island boasts a dozen or so modern marinas, perfectly equipped to receive yachts from all over Europe. In ports such as Svaneke, Gudhjem, Hasle, or Tejn, you can moor surrounded by picturesque towns, enjoy fresh fish, and experience the unique atmosphere of a Baltic adventure. Bornholm’s harbors combine functionality, coziness, and the island’s characteristic tranquility, creating ideal conditions for a seaside escape.
Rønne Havn is the main port of Bornholm, located on the island’s western coast. It serves passenger ferries, cargo ships, and yachts, making it the most important maritime connection between Bornholm, Denmark, and Scandinavia.
Nexø Havn is the second-largest port on Bornholm, located on the island’s eastern coast. Once an important fishing center, today it serves commercial, fishing, and yacht traffic, while preserving its traditional seaside character.
Balka Havn is a small, picturesque marina on Bornholm’s southeastern coast. It is popular among sailors and water sports enthusiasts, and its calm waters and proximity to Balka Beach make it a perfect spot for a summer getaway.
Svaneke Havn is a charming and intimate harbour that captivates visitors with its unique atmosphere. Although manoeuvring can be demanding and the number of berths is limited, its exceptional location in the very heart of Bornholm’s most beautiful town more than makes up for it.
The harbour in Gudhjem is a picturesque, traditional fishing haven set on the steep slope of Bokul Hill on Bornholm’s eastern coast. Its characteristic buildings, narrow lanes and classic houses give the town a unique atmosphere with an almost Mediterranean touch.
Port Nørresand, also known as Gudhjem North, is a small and charming harbour located just north of the main port in Gudhjem. Surrounded by cliffs and a calm little bay, it retains the authentic character of a traditional local fishing harbour.
Many of Bornholm’s ports were established in natural, rocky bays that served as shelters for ships as early as the Middle Ages. Over the centuries, they were transformed into modern harbors while preserving their original layout and the unique charm of fishing towns. In places like Svaneke and Gudhjem, you can still see old stone quays and warehouses that once bustled with trade in herring and cod – symbols of Bornholm’s maritime heritage.
