Rø Plantage – forest in northern Bornholm

Rø Plantage – forest in northern Bornholm

Rø Plantage is a small but remarkably charming woodland in the northern part of Bornholm, near the village of Rø. The forest conceals a dramatic landscape of narrow rift valleys, rocky cliffs and steep slopes, with its centrepiece being the picturesque Lake Borgedalssøen, nestled in the Søndre Borgedal valley. It is the perfect destination for those who love peaceful walks surrounded by wild, Nordic nature.

Borgedalssøen – the heart of the plantation

For many visitors, Rø Plantage means above all Borgedalssøen – a lake situated in the Søndre Borgedal valley. It can be enjoyed from two perspectives: from the spectacular viewpoint along Sigtevej road, which offers a panoramic view of the water surrounded by forest, or during a walk along the scenic path around the lake. The trail around Borgedalssøen is one of the most popular short hikes on Bornholm.

Rift valleys and rocky landscape

The main part of the plantation extends on the other side of the lake, and it is here that the most dramatic scenery awaits. Narrow rift valleys with near-vertical rock walls, steep hills and sudden drops in elevation create a terrain quite unlike typical Danish forests. The Nordic character of Rø Plantage is accentuated by birch and conifer trees, but the forest also hides idyllic corners – quiet woodland ponds and beech groves carpeted with anemones in spring.

Overnight stays in the forest

Wild camping is permitted in Rø Plantage in accordance with the Danish Nature Agency (Naturstyrelsen) guidelines. It is one of the few places on Bornholm where you can legally spend the night under a tent in the forest, surrounded only by the rustle of trees and birdsong. It is advisable to familiarise yourself with the local camping regulations before your visit.

Nature

Rø Plantage, together with the neighbouring Almindingen, has been designated as an Important Bird Area by BirdLife International. The forest provides habitat for many woodland and raptor species. The varied terrain – from dry, rocky slopes to damp valleys with lakes – supports a rich diversity of both plant and animal species. In spring, the beech forest floor is covered with dense carpets of anemones, while in summer the rift valleys offer natural coolness even on the hottest days.
