Forests of Bornholm

Forests of Bornholm

Bornholm is one of the most densely forested islands in Denmark. Vast woodlands cover the central and eastern parts of the island, offering kilometres of hiking and cycling trails, dramatic rock formations, deep valleys and quiet forest lakes. From the monumental Almindingen, through the rocky Paradisbakkerne, to the Nordic Rø Plantage – each of Bornholm's forests has its own unique character.

The forests of Bornholm are not just places for walks – they are living monuments to the island's history. Afforestation efforts dating back to the early 19th century transformed barren heathlands into rich ecosystems that are now home to European bison, over 200 bird species and rare amphibians. Wild camping, observation towers and the ruins of medieval fortresses hidden among the trees make Bornholm's forests an essential part of any visit to the island.

The forests of Bornholm are the result of many generations of forestry work, transforming barren heathlands and pastures into vast woodland complexes since the early 19th century. Today, forest covers a significant part of the island and is one of its greatest natural attractions. Beyond the three main forest areas, Bornholm also offers numerous smaller groves, plantations and nature reserves – each with its own microclimate and distinctive character. Be sure to bring comfortable shoes and a map, as the forest trails can surprise even experienced hikers.
