Vang Vandmølle is a picturesque early 19th-century watermill, tucked away in a valley on the western coast near the village of Vang. It represents not only historical engineering but also a piece of local heritage, where traditional craftsmanship meets Bornholm’s rugged coastal landscape. The area is perfect for walking, and a visit to the mill can easily be combined with a trip to the nearby quarry.
Although watermills are less common on Bornholm, they formed an important complement to the island’s milling system. They used the energy of falling water to drive the mill wheels, usually fed by small streams or ponds. Their construction was sturdier and allowed operation regardless of wind conditions, which made them more predictable in use. On Bornholm, examples of such mills can be found in the island’s river valleys.
Its scenic setting on Bornholm’s west coast, close to cliffs and coastal landscapes, makes a visit rewarding both historically and nature-wise.
Practical notes: Parking is available at Vang harbour; from there a footpath leads to the mill.
Good to know: while the building is well maintained and can be viewed from the outside, the interior is not always open to visitors, and the waterwheel is often idle — the water supply and ponds are currently inactive.
The mill was built in 1811 by a local resident (sources suggest Poul Hansen) in the Vang area.
In the 1920s the mill fell into disrepair, but renovation began in 1927.
In 1969 it was formally taken over by the organization Foreningen Bornholm, which has looked after its upkeep.
Another major restoration was carried out in 2010–2011, repairing the roof and improving the overall technical condition.
The mill is no longer in commercial use — it operated until the early 20th century (around 1905).
Structure: a timber-frame building with three or four bays and a thatched roof.
Location: set into steep terrain by the Ringebækken stream flowing toward the sea; the site has a significant gradient.
Drive: water falls onto the waterwheel from above, powering the millstones.
Type: an overshot waterwheel (overfaldshjul), a less common type on Bornholm.
