Bechs Stubbmølle (the post mill in Svaneke)

Bechs Mølle is the oldest preserved post mill in Denmark, built in 1629 in Svaneke. It is an exceptional monument not only because of its age, but also because it is the largest mill of this type in the country. Although it is no longer used for milling, it remains well-preserved and is cared for by the local community as a valuable example of historic craftsmanship and technology.

Bechs Mølle, Svaneke Post Mill

A post mill is an older type of windmill in which the entire structure rotates around a central vertical post in order to position the sails in the direction of the wind. The construction is entirely wooden, lighter, but less stable in strong winds. The interior contains the mechanisms that drive the millstones, while on the outside a large tailpole is visible, used to turn the mill.

Current Condition and Use

Bechs Mølle has been listed as a protected historical monument since 1960.

After milling operations stopped in 1928, care of the mill and its accompanying buildings passed to local organizations – first Foreningen Bornholm, and since 1975 the association Byforeningen Svanekes Venner.

Restoration work has been carried out several times, including in 1972–73 and again in 2002–2007. Thanks to these efforts, the mill is preserved in very good condition.

Although the structure and mechanisms have been preserved, Bechs Mølle no longer operates as an active flour mill.

Today, the mill serves a museum-like role and stands as an important technical and cultural monument. It remains a distinctive landmark in the landscape and a popular tourist attraction, although its interior is generally not open to visitors.

History

Bechs Mølle was built in 1629.

In 1814, the mill was purchased by Hans Bentzen Bech, from whom it takes its name.

Between 1848 and 1860, a miller’s residence and a bakery were added; the bakery began operating in 1857.

In 1866, the mill was dismantled and relocated due to road reconstruction. Many original elements were reused, but changes were also introduced: the mill was enlarged and additional equipment was installed (e.g., extra millstones, a groats mill, a husking mill, and sieves).

Architecture and Notable Features

The mill’s construction is wooden, built with large structural beams.

The interior (at least in part) preserves many original construction elements and inscriptions (such as dated beams and name markings).
