Church Aa Kirke (Aakirkeby) Aa Kirke (Aakirkeby)

Aa Church (Aa Kirke) is one of the oldest and most impressive religious monuments on Bornholm. It stands in the very center of Aakirkeby and immediately draws attention with its two characteristic towers. The church, originally dedicated to St. John the Baptist, was built in the 12th century and has preserved many Romanesque elements, including richly decorated portals and stone architectural details.

The most valuable artifact is the baptismal font made of limestone by the Gotlandic master Sigraff, adorned with a runic inscription – one of the finest pieces of medieval art on Bornholm.

Bornholm’s Romanesque Treasure – Aa Church in Aakirkeby

The church’s interior has undergone several renovations, including in 1874 and 1968, while retaining its original character. The name "Aa Kirke" comes from two nearby rivers – Læså and Grødby å – which have long been part of the natural landscape surrounding Aakirkeby. Today, the church serves not only as a place of worship but also as an important tourist attraction, visited by lovers of history, architecture, and early Scandinavian art.
