Church in Østerlars

Church in Østerlars, Rundkirke Church in Østerlars

The largest and oldest of the four round churches on Bornholm, Østerlars Rundkirke was built around 1150 and dedicated to St. Lawrence (St. Laurentius). Its massive three-story structure with a central tower and thick stone walls served not only as a place of worship but also as a fortified stronghold.

In the Middle Ages, the inhabitants of nearby villages sought refuge here from pirates and invaders, and from the upper levels, they could observe the surrounding area.

Østerlars Rundkirke – a symbol of Bornholm and medieval defensive architecture

The interior of the church impresses with its simplicity and authentic character. On the central pillar, Romanesque frescoes depicting scenes from the life of Christ have been preserved – among the oldest and best maintained on Bornholm. Narrow stairs lead to the upper levels, which once housed defensive and storage rooms. From the outside, the church stands out with its whitewashed walls and conical roof, creating a picturesque contrast with the island’s green landscape.

Today, Østerlars Rundkirke is one of Bornholm’s main tourist attractions – visited by more than 120,000 people each year. Despite its popularity, it has retained a unique, tranquil character and spiritual atmosphere that recalls the old days when faith was inseparable from defense and survival.
