Built around the year 1200, Olsker Rundkirke is one of Bornholm’s four famous round churches. Standing high on a hill with sweeping views of the sea and the nearby islands of Christiansø and Frederiksø, it once served as a vital landmark for sailors navigating the Baltic. Its elevated position also made it a lookout point and a place of defense – from the upper floors, locals could spot incoming ships and warn nearby villages of danger in time.
The church’s thick stone walls and solid tower offered safety and shelter during times of unrest.
The interior of Olsker Rundkirke retains the quiet charm of Romanesque simplicity – modest forms, small windows, and a calm, contemplative atmosphere. Though smaller than Østerlars, the church feels wonderfully authentic and intimate. Inside, faint traces of medieval wall paintings can still be seen, and from the surrounding hill you can enjoy one of the most beautiful panoramic views of northern Bornholm.
Today, Olsker Rundkirke welcomes visitors looking for peace, history, and scenic beauty. Surrounded by greenery and old stone walls, it remains one of the island’s most picturesque spots – a reminder of a time when faith and defense were closely intertwined.
