The Bornholm Ceramic Factory and Museum (Hjorths Fabrik) in Rønne is one of the island’s most unique attractions, where visitors can see how stoneware has been produced using traditional methods for more than 150 years.
It’s not just a museum but also a fully functioning workshop, where historic craftsmanship meets contemporary design. Visitors can learn about the history of Bornholm ceramics, observe artists at work in the studios, and admire the finished pieces in the factory’s shop and garden.
Ceramics are one of Bornholm’s oldest and most recognizable artistic traditions. Since the 19th century, the island has been known for its high-quality clay and the skill of its local artisans, with Hjorths Fabrik standing as its symbolic heart. The museum allows visitors to follow the entire process of creating ceramics – from preparing the clay and shaping it, to glazing and firing in the kiln.
The permanent exhibition illustrates the evolution of styles and techniques over the years, while temporary displays showcase the work of contemporary artists. During the spring and summer seasons, the workshops are open to visitors, offering a close-up look at how tradition comes alive in the daily work of craftsmen.

Hjorths Fabrik is one of the oldest continuously operating ceramic factories in all of Denmark. Since 1859, it has been producing stoneware using original techniques and many 19th-century machines. This allows visitors to see the entire process of making pottery exactly as it was over 150 years ago – from raw clay to a finished work of art.
The factory and museum are located in the center of Rønne, just a few minutes’ walk from the port and the Bornholm Museum. Hjorths Fabrik can be reached on foot, by car (parking available nearby), or by bus – BAT lines run regularly to the town center.
