Hammeren Lighthouse (Hammeren Fyr)

Hammeren Lighthouse (Hammeren Fyr)

Hammeren Lighthouse is one of the most distinctive landmarks in northern Bornholm, rising proudly on the highest hill of the Hammeren peninsula. Built in the 19th century, it served for decades as the main navigational light for ships travelling along the island’s northern coastline. Today, it continues to enchant visitors with its fascinating history and sweeping views over the sea and the rugged cliffs of Hammerknuden.

Panoramas and Northern Bornholm’s Tranquillity – Hammerodde Lighthouse

Although Hammeren Fyr no longer serves its original purpose, it remains one of the most captivating viewpoints on Bornholm. A scenic path winds its way to the lighthouse through the rugged, rocky landscape of the Hammeren peninsula, and the walk itself is one of the most enjoyable routes in the area. Once at the top, you can admire not only the wide panorama of the Baltic Sea but also the remarkable sense of peace and open space that gives this spot such a unique atmosphere.

The immediate surroundings of the lighthouse invite you to take a short break — there is plenty of space to sit down and enjoy the sight of white sails on the horizon or to watch the steep cliffs that have shaped the dramatic character of northern Bornholm for centuries. It is an ideal place for photography at any time of day: the light is soft and golden in the morning, while in the evening the sunset can turn the sea into a shimmering sheet of orange and pink. Hammeren Fyr is a must-see for anyone wishing to experience the wild, northern spirit of the island.

Information

Did you know? Due to its elevated position, the light of Hammeren Fyr was sometimes invisible from the sea during fog or low cloud cover. This led to the construction of the auxiliary lighthouse – Hammerodde Fyr.

Location: It replaced the older Stejlebjerg lighthouse (dating from 1802), which had been modernised, but a new, higher-positioned lighthouse was ultimately chosen.

Year of construction: The lighthouse was built in 1872 on the highest point of the Hammeren peninsula – Ørnebjerget hill (approx. 82 metres above sea level).

Construction and appearance

The tower: A round granite lighthouse – the stone was sourced locally from the surrounding area.

Height of the tower: 21 metres

Height of the light above sea level: Approx. 91 metres

Significance and curiosities

Function: The lighthouse was in regular use until 1990. Since 2011, it has once again been illuminated at night as a historical light and a tourist attraction.

Accessibility: Hammeren Fyr is open to visitors — entry is free of charge.

View: From the top of the tower, you can enjoy spectacular views over northern Bornholm and the sea; on clear days, the southern coast of Sweden can also be seen.

Surroundings: The lighthouse is surrounded by the natural landscapes of Hammerknuden, with walking paths, cliffs, granite boulders and old quarries — a popular destination for hiking.
