Kultippen – Bornholm's Martian landscape
Kultippen is one of the most extraordinary places on Bornholm – a barren, vegetation-free terrain south of Hasle that looks like the surface of Mars. This peculiar, man-made landscape sits right on the Baltic coast and captivates visitors with its dramatic formations, spectacular sunsets, and one of the darkest skies on the island, perfect for stargazing.
A visit to Mars
Explore this extraordinary yet beautiful landscape south of Hasle. You won't find any vegetation here – just a few old tipping wagons from the days when coal was mined in the area. The entire place resembles a Martian desert. Kultippen lies right on the coast, and a path leads directly down to the beach.
On warm summer evenings you can enjoy beautiful sunsets over the Baltic Sea from here. And if you stay until after dark – look up. The area has very little light pollution, so the stars shine exceptionally bright and clear. In the Martian landscape of Kultippen you can feel like you're on another planet while gazing at a sky full of stars.
How Kultippen was created
In the 1940s, coal was mined near Hasle. During the sorting process, "waste products" such as sand, gravel, clay, and coal dust were separated from the coal. These sediments were loaded onto tipping wagons (in Danish tipvogne), transported to the coast, and dumped over the edge of the cliff.
This human activity transformed the landscape beyond recognition – deep crevices formed and all vegetation was stripped away. Today the site resembles a barren, Martian desert. The name Kultippen comes from these very wagons that "tipped" (tippede) the waste over the edge.

How to get to Kultippen
Coming from Rønne, head towards Hasle and turn off following the signs for Sorthat-Muleby. Continue towards Hasle until you reach Glasværksvej – turn onto it and drive to the end, where you'll find the car park. Coming from Hasle, you'll find Glasværksvej and the car park before you reach Sorthat-Muleby.
The car park is marked on Google Maps as "P-Kultippen" and is located just 50 metres south of Kultippen itself. Parking is free.
