Shelters and primitive campsites

Shelters and primitive campsites

Wooden tourist shelters on Bornholm are simple structures with a roof and floor, often equipped with a fireplace and benches. They are scattered all over the island – in forests, by the sea and along hiking trails – making them perfect for both hikers and cyclists exploring the island.

Good to know
  • Wild camping is only allowed in designated Fri teltplads areas, and campfires are permitted exclusively in prepared fire pits.
  • Most hiking and cycling routes on Bornholm run close to campsites and shelters, making it easy to plan multi-day adventures around the island.

Shelter locations

Each spot has its own unique character and amenities: some are right by the sea and also accessible for kayakers, others sit deep in the forest or near scenic viewpoints. Many have nearby toilets, drinking water sources, or parking areas. Sometimes you'll also find kiosks, small harbours with extra services, or local shops.

Rules for using shelters are simple and the same for all locations: the "first come, first served" rule applies, campfires are only allowed in designated fire pits, and after your stay, you must leave the place tidy and make sure the fire is completely extinguished. In many shelters, you can stay for only one night, and space is limited – usually for 3 to 6 adults.

Rules for campsites and shelters
  1. The 1-2-3 rule: You may stay in the same place for only one night, you can pitch only two tents in the same area, and each tent can accommodate a maximum of three people.
  2. Your dog is welcome but must be kept on a leash – including at the campsite or shelter area.
  3. Camping is only allowed in designated forest areas.
  4. Motor vehicles are prohibited in forest areas.
  5. Use open fire only in marked fire pits. If there’s no fire pit, use a gas cartridge or other enclosed cooking equipment.
  6. Tents must be out of sight of nearby houses, farms, campsites, and roads.
  7. You may listen to or play music, but not loudly.
  8. Thank you for not leaving any litter behind – including toilet paper.
