Bornholms Defence Museum is an engaging museum dedicated to the military history of Bornholm, housed in historic fortification and storage buildings in Rønne. The museum presents the island’s defensive past – from the Middle Ages, through the Swedish conflicts, to the German and Soviet occupations during the Second World War, as well as the period of the Cold War.
The collections include numerous exhibits such as uniforms, weapons and military equipment, as well as an original German Enigma cipher machine – a remarkable artefact well known from films and literature. In the courtyard, visitors can see historic military vehicles, artillery and other heavy equipment, making the visit fascinating for both adults and families with children.
Visiting the museum is a walk through the rich and often turbulent history of Bornholm – from the era of medieval fortifications to modern conflicts and military strategies. The exhibitions are arranged chronologically, making it easy to understand how defensive functions evolved over time and why the island played an important role in conflicts between states.
The museum space includes both the interiors of historic buildings and an open courtyard with vehicles and artillery, adding a dynamic dimension to the visit and allowing visitors to experience the atmosphere of former barracks and training grounds first-hand.
Thanks to regular special events such as equipment demonstrations, lectures and short historical presentations, the museum encourages active engagement and a deeper understanding of the region’s military heritage.
The history of the museum dates back to the late 1970s, when the first military-themed exhibitions were organised following the closure of a military storage facility within the fortress complex. In 1980, the institution was officially established.
The collections include artefacts connected both with local defence units and with Bornholm’s role in wider European conflicts. The exhibitions cover a broad spectrum, ranging from weapons and uniforms to cipher machines and military communications, as well as heavy vehicles from successive historical periods.
One of the most well-known exhibits is a replica of the Enigma cipher machine, presented for educational purposes and illustrating the principles behind German encryption systems used during the Second World War.
In the museum courtyard, visitors can not only see but also touch historic artillery pieces and vehicles, creating a unique opportunity for memorable photographs and for experiencing the atmosphere of a former military training ground.
The museum is located at Arsenalvej 8 in Rønne, about a 15-minute walk (approx. 1 km) from the harbour and the main part of the town, making it easy to reach on foot.
Getting there by car or bicycle is straightforward – the location is signposted from the main streets of Rønne, and parking is available nearby.
