Legal regulations and rules for staying with a motorhome on Bornholm

General rule: wild camping in nature is prohibited – you cannot simply park your motorhome on a beach, in a forest, or in a nature reserve without explicit permission.

Stopping (sleeping, resting) in your motorhome in public car parks and along roads is allowed, but it must not take the form of camping – setting up tables, grills, roof tents, or creating a campsite is not permitted.

Motorhomes up to about 3.5 tonnes are often treated as regular cars if parked legally and without causing obstruction.

Many locations offer designated "autocamper pitches" in harbours, equipped with electricity, water, toilets, and waste disposal facilities.

During the season (approx. 15 May – 15 September), fees are usually charged for overnight stays in harbour motorhome areas; outside the season you can park but services may be limited.

Short-term parking (e.g. in town centres or near attractions) often requires a parking disc – set the arrival time when parking. Discs are available at tourist information centres, and parking time limits may apply.

If you wish to enjoy full amenities, it’s best to book spots at campsites – especially during summer – to have access to electricity, water, drainage, showers, and other facilities.

Motorhome parking areas ("autocamper pladser")

Harbours: Nørrekås, Hasle Havn, Tejn Havn
  • During the season (approx. 15 May – 15 September), motorhomes can park in designated areas in the harbours.
  • Fee applies – access to electricity, water, waste disposal, toilets, and other facilities included.
  • Outside the season, parking is usually allowed ("rasten"), though some services may be unavailable.
  • Spaces are limited (around 6 in some harbours); no reservations – first come, first served.
Other car parks with restrictions
  • Not all car parks allow overnight stays – sometimes only short-term parking is permitted.
  • For example, the car park near Balka Beach allows overnight parking.
  • Other car parks like Boderne, Bakkerne, Østre Sømark etc. often prohibit overnight stays.

Worth knowing:

  1. Always check local parking signs – they may indicate time limits, "no overnight stay" or "no camping" rules (e.g. no furniture or BBQs).
  2. If you plan a longer stay, choose a campsite or harbour with full access to utilities and services.
  3. Outside the main season, check which places remain open – some services close for winter.

Practical tips and good manners

Respect nature Leave your spot clean and take your waste with you. Bornholm promotes responsible behaviour in nature.
Avoid Avoid lighting barbecues or open fires in prohibited areas. Always check local fire regulations – bans may apply during dry periods.
Remember Follow parking rules: some areas require a parking disc and may have limited parking times.
Winter season During winter or off-season, check which facilities remain open – not all ports or campsites operate year-round.
Information Always verify the latest local information (only on official websites) before planning an overnight stay – rules may change depending on season or nature protection laws.
Waste tanks There is a designated waste disposal point for motorhomes on Remisevej in Rønne.

Bornholm is an excellent destination for motorhome travellers: it lets you enjoy beautiful nature, peace, and comfort (especially on campsites), while still offering flexibility – parking and overnight options are widely available, though with some restrictions. The key is proper planning and awareness of local rules.
